There are 22 million people residing in Sri Lanka. Most people are Buddhists, and there are Hindus, Moslems and Catholics. We landed in Colombo, the capital, at 1:30 in the afternoon. Our guide, Prasad, met us at the port. Colombo has about 2 million people. We were supposed to have arrived at 9:30 but there were problems with the generator so we were late. Interesting fact…..we grew up calling Sri Lanka, Ceylon, it was called that because the British, who held the country as part of their empire for 150 years, could not say SrI Lanka, so it was shortened to Cey ( for Sri) and Lon ( for Lanka). The average income is $1800 a year. Yes, you read that right. The British brought the tea plants here from China and tea is still the major export. The country became independent in 1974. It is going through massive turmoil now and the president was forced to flee 18 months ago and new elections were held. They have a 2 party system of government…..ok enough of the history lesson! Consider your self educated.
